Universal Principles of Movement Studio

Full Body Resistance Band Training

Created and developed by Martha Yoshida, the Yoshida Technique of dynamic movement principles using resistive banding has long been the movement study favored by professional dancers, actors and singers. The technique utilizes dynabands ingeniously wrapped and tied directly onto the body for both support and resistance.

Backbone and Wingspan director Tim Driscoll has studied this method directly and extensively with
Martha Yoshida and uses a
modified version of her
work to train people in what could and
has been described as
the ultimate core-strengthening workout.

The bands provide a framework of stabilization for spinal alignment and support as well as elastic resistance to strengthen the connection of the arms into the power of the back.

In a one-hour lesson, work on strength, flexibility and coordination all at the same time. Each individual session is tailored to each individual’s movement needs, and this kind of work is suited to beginners as well as seasoned athletes, artists, and anyone desiring deep bodily change. Tim Driscoll studied this technique for fourteen years with Martha Yoshida, utilizing her teaching to enhance his expertise as a professional writer, dancer, and actor. He now incorporates her work into the Pilates-based movement he teaches at Backbone and Wingspan. New York personal training

Tim teaches high-functioning professionals, artists of various mediums, bodyworkers and trainers, as well as individuals with injuries and chronic pain. This deep work has helped improve squash games, refine surfing skills, and deepen yoga practices. Yoshida band training

Core-strength as well as stabilization are achieved at once as the spine is moved through the bracing supportive elastic framework the bands provide. A total body conditioning workout of legs, back, arms, and deep abdominals results with long, lean muscular lines.

“I have worked for many years with Tim. He has a rare gift to integrate and incorporate different movement disciplines, absorbing those elements that are most in accord with the body’s truth.

The result is much more than exercise.

It is a movement education that reaches our most fundamental support system.

Connecting with and strengthening this deep support then allows for a freedom of movement and profound expression of ourselves in the world.”
