Universal Principles of Movement Studio

Luciana Achugar

Private Lessons
Luciana Achugar’s private lessons use the Pilates equipment and its repertory as the structure of the class, but draw from a larger vision of the mind-body co-efficient relationship.

In a one-one-one session geared specifically to each clients needs she is primarily concerned with developing a way of working which focuses on achieving a pain-free, strong and open body in which  the person gains an increasing awareness of posture and the use of the body/self.
By letting go of unnecessary tension and habitual patterns of use of our body, and learning to use gravity to our own advantage, one learns how to move better, and therefore feel and look better.
“Not only has she gently guided me in correcting my posture and bone structure/muscle memory, but she has made me 1000 times stronger.”
~ Liz Rappaport

Mat Classes
In her mat class Luciana leads a group through a challenging core-strengthening work-out that incorporates a lot of stretching, as well as some basic dance-based exercises which address foot mobility and hip joint flexibility in order to gain increased range of motion.

From these classes students gain a deepening awareness of the body and confidence in the use and expression of the body and the self.

Luciana’s teaching continues to develop and evolve as she grows in her passionate exploration of the potential for the body in movement through her work as a professional dancer and up-and-coming choreographer.

Inspiration
It was during her College years that she was first exposed to Pilates, although she did not feel particularly inspired by its vision - It seemed like just a notch above a gym exercise class or a physical therapy session. Her disinterest was most likely because at the same time she was exposed to the teaching of a few amazing dancers who completely changed her perception of the use of the body. From them she learned about new ways of approaching movement that seemed revolutionary and that affected a lot of positive changes in her technique, her posture and gave her an overall sense of ease.

It was through the discovery of Alexander and Release Technique that she learned in her own body that less is more. By learning not to “try” so hard but to “allow”, not to “fight” against the body and treat it as separate from oneself, but to embody one’s own natural structure and in turn find ease of movement and a natural, healthy muscle tone.

It was years later, that she revisited Pilates and was able to appreciate the brilliancy of the spring-resistance equipment and the diverse possibilities for movement in its exercise repertory. She was able to recognize the great potential in using the Pilates method and equipment as a medium to teach all that she had previously learned, and believed in.

Background
Luciana Achugar has been teaching Pilates-based movement in New York City since 1999 and has been a part of  Backbone and Wingspan since 2003.  Her teaching is grounded in a deep understanding of the body in movement and her knowledge of anatomy and kinesiology.

Before moving to New York in 1995 she graduated with a BFA in Dance from the California Institute of the Arts. It was during these years that she was first exposed to Pilates mat classes as part of her dance training, and where she was fortunate to get regular private lessons on the Pilates equipment as part of a rehabilitation treatment from a dance injury.

Luciana completed “The Pilates Method” teacher training in 1999 with Master Teacher Kelly Kane. Before completing the training she had already been highly recommended to teach in two different Pilates Studios because of her strong dance background and her ability to simply and to clearly translate movement into language.

Her teaching is greatly influenced by deeply involved studies of The Alexander Technique, Ballet, Modern and Post-Modern Dance, Yoga and “Release” Technique.

Most importantly, her approach to teaching about the “use” of the body/self is informed by 18 years of personal growth and self-discovery  as a dancer and 8 years of extensive research, exploration and experimentation with movement as a choreographer.

Professional Career
Luciana’s work has been presented in New York, among others, by Dance Theatre Workshop, Danspace Project, The Kitchen, PS 1 Contemporary Art Center and CANADA Gallery.  Elements of her artistic vision received a full-page interview in the dance section of Time Out New York and her full evening-length piece entitled “Exhausting Love at Danspace Project” made the top ten dance works of 2006 in Newsday.  She is exceptionally articulate about the processes of using the body as a primary means of expression and has been quoted in The New York Times in two articles written about the use of the body.
